Weekly Update
March 29, 2026
The race to lead the BC Conservatives has reached a critical bottleneck. Since our last update on March 17, the field has contracted further as the high costs of a modern leadership bid—and the pull of strategic alliances—begin to dictate the final stage of the contest.
1. Darrell Jones Withdraws, Backs Elliott
In the most significant shift of the week, former Save-On-Foods executive Darrell Jones suspended his campaign on March 28.
The Alliance: Jones threw his full support behind Caroline Elliott, stating they are "aligned on priorities" regarding small business and economic challenges.
The Impact: This is a major win for Elliott. By absorbing Jones’ private-sector credibility and his existing donor network, she has positioned herself as the clear alternative to the legislative establishment.
2. The Mainstreet Poll: A Two-Horse Race?
New polling data released this week (March 19–22) suggests a tightening battle at the top:
Caroline Elliott: 21.2%
Peter Milobar: 20.8%
Undecided: 31.6% With over 30% of members still undecided, the race is effectively a toss-up between Elliott and Milobar. The "Blue Score" for both is nearly identical heading into April.
3. The Financial "Wall"
The primary reason for recent withdrawals is the looming April 1st deadline. Candidates must pay a non-refundable $40,000 installment by Wednesday to remain in the race.
Observation: Jones’ exit just days before this deadline suggests that bottom-tier candidates are choosing to consolidate their resources behind frontrunners rather than risk personal or donor funds on a narrowing path to victory.
### Critical Dates Ahead
April 1: Deadline for the $40,000 leadership fee installment. Watch for any "silent withdrawals" on this day.
April 18: The ultimate deadline. Final $60,000 fee due and the Membership Cutoff. After this date, no new members can be signed up to vote.
