The Blue Score Methodology
How We Calculate the Odds for BC’s Next Leader
At BCBlueTracker.ca, our goal is to provide a neutral, data-driven forecast of the leadership race. The "Blue Score" is our proprietary probability index, updated weekly to reflect the current momentum of all 9 approved candidates.
1. The Weighted Scorecard
Unlike a general election, the BC Conservative leadership is not decided by a simple majority of votes. The party uses a Weighted Electoral District System. To reflect this, our "Blue Score" is calculated using four key pillars:
Endorsement Weight (40%): We track public support from sitting MLAs, former Cabinet Ministers, and Federal MPs. In a weighted system, "Establishment" support often signals a candidate’s ability to organize in specific ridings.
Regional Reach (30%): Each of BC’s 93 ridings is worth 100 points. A candidate with 5,000 supporters in one city has less "Blue Score" than a candidate with 500 supporters spread across 10 rural ridings. We track campaign stops and regional volunteer announcements to gauge this spread.
Momentum & Buzz (20%): We monitor social media growth (X, Instagram, Facebook) and media mentions. Rapid growth in followers often precedes "membership surges" before the April 18 deadline.
Fundraising & Infrastructure (10%): Based on publicly disclosed donations and the size of the campaign team. Candidates must pay $115,000 in fees to stay in the race—those who pay early show the highest financial "Blue Score."
2. The "Preferential Ballot" Factor
The final vote on May 30, 2026, will be a ranked ballot. If no one gets 50% in the first round, the last-place candidate is eliminated and their votes move to the second choice.
Our Logic: We factor in "down-ballot" appeal. A candidate who is everyone’s second choice often has a higher "Blue Score" than a polarizing candidate who is only a first choice.
3. Data Integrity & Neutrality
Independent:BCBlueTracker.ca is not funded by any candidate or the Conservative Party of BC.
Non-Polling: While we include public polling when available, the Blue Score is a forecast based on organizational strength, not a direct poll of members.
Frequency: Data is refreshed every Tuesday morning to account for weekend campaign events.
