Candidate Profile: Iain Black
"The Turnaround Specialist"
The Quick Bio
Iain Black is a seasoned executive and former provincial Cabinet Minister with a reputation for "fixing" complex organizations. After a successful career in the technology sector (including roles at IBM and as CEO of several tech firms), he served as the MLA for Port Moody-Westwood from 2005 to 2011. During his time in government, he held three major portfolios: Minister of Labour, Minister of Small Business, Technology and Economic Development, and Minister of Citizens' Services.
After leaving provincial politics, Black spent eight years as the President and CEO of the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, where he led a major financial and brand "reinvention" of the organization. He recently re-entered the political arena as a federal Conservative candidate in 2025 before launching his bid for the provincial leadership.
Key Policy Pillars
Economic Turnaround: Black’s campaign is built on his private-sector record. He argues that BC’s $150B+ debt requires a "CEO’s approach" to restore profitability and fiscal sanity.
Cabinet Readiness: He emphasizes his experience on the Treasury Board, arguing he is the only candidate who understands how to build and manage a $90-billion provincial budget without a "learning curve."
Small Government: Advocating for low taxes and minimal government interference in personal lives, faith, and business.
Reinventing the "Big Tent": Black is vocal about moving past "ideological purity tests," focusing instead on a winning coalition that includes traditional conservatives, young voters, and former NDP supporters.
The "Blue Score" Analysis
Strengths: Unmatched executive and cabinet-level experience. His "Blue Score" reflects strong organizational ties, including endorsements from high-profile figures like Teresa Wat and former federal minister Ed Fast.
The "Legacy" Challenge: As a former Gordon Campbell-era minister, he faces scrutiny from the "hard right" of the party who are wary of the former BC Liberal establishment. He has been proactive in defending his conservative record as a "True Blue" thinker who was simply part of a different party name at the time.
Winning Path: Black wins if the membership decides that "readiness to govern" is the most important trait. If he can convince the base that his "turnaround" skills are what the province needs to survive the current deficit, he becomes the natural choice for pragmatists.
